Job Title: Maritime Instructor (Yachtmaster Instructor)

ROLE OVERVIEW

This is a full time and permanent position Ondeck Maritime Training (OMT), delivering RYA (Royal Yachting Association), ADOMS (Antigua and Barbuda Marine Services) and OMT Courses. Established over 15 years ago, OMT now delivers a wide variety of training courses for both experienced and inexperienced students alike. The candidate will deliver courses across the training fleet, depending on the course type and the experience of the students. They must be dynamic and adaptable in their approach, delivering high quality courses whilst undertaking other elements of their role.

This role offers variety and the right candidate will be a key team member, working with the Principal and Chief Instructor to ensure the standards of training are met, as well as contributing to new and developing courses.

Normally working Monday to Friday, 0800hrs to 1600hrs, the successful candidate will deliver all levels of the RYA’s cruising scheme, with the opportunity for personal development and 21 days annual leave per annum, including local public holidays, available after the completion of the three month probation period.

ROLE EXPECTATION
The key purpose of the Maritime Instructor is to deliver high quality and up to date training, both afloat and ashore and ensure that this training is delivered safely and in accordance with the  RYA, ADOMS, MCA or any other regulatory/awarding body requirements.

Customer focus is key to the role, and in the line of carrying out tasks, training or in interactions with customers, the Instructor will be polite, professional and approachable.

As a minimum, it is expected that the Instructor will carry out the following duties (Per Month):

  • Two Practical Sailing Courses (Competent Crew, Dayskipper, Coastal Skipper Course or Yachtmaster Preparation Course)
  • One Shorebased Navigation Course (If qualified to do so)
  • Assist With Planned Vessel Maintenance

It is acknowledged that the nature of the work requires the successful candidate to be flexible and acknowledges that some weekend work and occasional public holiday work is likely, with time off in lieu offered.

All instructional employees are required to adhere to the RYA Instructor Code of Conduct alongside the company’s full list of policies, processes and procedures. 

Upon successful completion of the probationary period a training and development plan will be put into place, offering the employee personal development opportunities and courses.

Applicants should be aware that a previous criminal record may prevent the issue of a Working Permit, by the Antigua and Barbuda Board of Immigration. UK Applicants will be required to produce an ACRO Police Certificate, prior to starting. Applicants outside of the UK will be required to produce a national police record certificate from their home country. 

ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS/CERTIFICATES/EXPERIENCE

  • RYA Yachtmaster (Offshore or Ocean) with Commercial Endorsement; AND 
  • RYA Yachtmaster Instructor Endorsement
  • ENG1 Seafarer Medical OR ML5 Seafarer Medical 
  • Experienced in delivering all levels of the RYA Sail Cruising Scheme

  • RYA Navigation Instructor
  • RYA Radar Instructor
  • RYA First Aid Instructor
  • RYA SRC Instructor/Assessor
  • RYA Diesel Engine Instructor
  • RYA Sea Survival Instructor/RYA Offshore Personal Survival Course Instructor
  • MCA Approved STCW Instructor (Any Discipline)
  • Experience of delivering other forms of maritime training
